THE PURPLES ARE COMING! by Ilow and Sheri Roque is a must have in any Catholic elementary classroom. It is a great book to structure religion lessons around or simply pull off the shelf for an enjoyable afternoon read aloud.
This children’s book is sure to please both children and adults with its amusing characters, vibrant illustrations, and underlying sense of adventure. The adorable animal friends have quaint attributes and fun names like Bella Lambrusco, the lively little lamb or Gracie O’Hare, the bunny full of nervous energy. Underlying messages of friendship, apostleship, and prayer resound throughout the story.
The book is full of rich vocabulary, introducing children to a plethora of new words. The vivid description of the characters and setting makes the poem come alive. Furthermore, it is thought provoking and challenges children to think about important aspects of their faith.
My kindergarten students absolutely love this book. They enjoy finding the little critters in the illustrations, especially the ladybugs. It is remarkable to witness these five and six-year-olds use elements from the story and illustrations to teach each other about their faith.The students with siblings who’ve made their First Holy Communion proudly share that the rabbit is wearing a scapular. Another student informed everyone that the story must take place during Lent because Father Fred is wearing purple and it doesn’t look cold enough to be Advent. They like talking about how the animals are good friends and look out for each other. They laugh hysterically every time Dink declares he’s tired as a biscuit.
This book is one-of-a-kind. Children enjoy it and their faith is enriched at the same time. Kudos to Ilow and Sheri Roque; well done and thank you for this invaluable resource! Lisa Wolfer

The Catholic message is effectively woven into the storyline and is worded in ways that will prompt your child to ask curious questions about the faith. Perhaps more than anything else, it presents the Church and the Catholic faith in a warm and comforting light. We can give a theological lecture on how the Church is our mother, but this book will make your child feel it. Making your young child feel the beauty of the Church is much more effective than waiting until they're a teenager and trying to convince them. I can't recommend this book highly enough and we look forward to reading its sequel."
